Your name is what identifies you; it’s who you are. Capitalizing our names is one of the first things we are taught when we learn to write. Now with e-mail and all it’s perceived informality, to many, capitalizing their name isn’t important enough to hit that shift key.
From configuring how your e-mail program displays your name, to filling out Web inquiry forms on behalf of your business or making online purchases, to be taken more seriously it behooves you to always formally capitalize your name.
John Doe – not john doe, not JOHN DOE. John Doe.
There will be perceptions that will be made when you don’t think it necessary to hit the shift key. Are you lazy or uneducated — or both? Two words you don’t want to be associated to you when it comes to business!
One would assume those in business would know this to be an important issue. My experience tells me otherwise. I receive handfuls of inquiries through my WordPress Consultant Site every day and at least half of those who are thinking of starting a new Web site business or seeking assistance with their current online enterprise do not capitalize their name!
What is the main excuse I am given for not capitalizing one’s name? “It’s just habit.” A habit to look lazy? A habit be appear uneducated? The online world is so competitive that in business you cannot, should not, risk negative perceptions that you can control.
Time to break the habit!
