Technology, E-mail Etiquette and New Friends

One of the neat things about this online gig, has always been the ability to meet others that you would have otherwise not had the chance to cross paths with. Back in the early 1990s at home on a 9600 baud modem, it was clear as day to me where all this was going. And, it isn’t over yet — we’ve still only scratched the surface in regard to how technology will continue to evolve and affect our lives, relationships, businesses and culture.

This weekend I had the pleasure of communicating with a new friend who found my sites and contacted me. Unlike many Blogs and Web sites, I make myself assessable and answer every e-mail promptly and personally.  That’s simply good e-mail etiquette and most certainly can contribute to your relationship building potential.

We began a conversation about e-mail etiquette that quickly turned into an appreciation for what the other was doing on their little slice of the Web. Seems he had run into some of the issues I talk about here and on my other sites that caused him to seek out more information… and luckily he tripped on me.

Let me introduce to you David Giacalone over at Harvard Law. His Blog is one of the Top 100 list of the best websites by lawyers for lawyers. A lawyer and poet known for his “breathless punditry”, David helped get the word out about the importance of using the BCc field in his posting: email etiquette: use Bcc for groups, please.

This is just another example of how technology brings us together, introduces us to new people, resources and ideas we may have never have thought to think. As I stated on my consulting Blog last week in my post “Thankful for the Evolving Web”: “How can anyone online today, not be bursting at the seems over all the potential and opportunity the current environment offers?!”
